For those of you who bought brand new bikes, how many of you followed the manufacturer’s recommended break in guidelines?

I have to admit, those guidelines went out the window the second day I had my bike… puttering around highway 101 @ under 4K rpms just wasn’t gonna cut it.

I bought a new 250R about a month ago and never kept it under 4k, but I try not to take it much over 6-7k. My first day on it I tried to keep it between 4-5k rpm and there was just no way I could maintain that speed getting around, I would hold up traffic. So far no issues, I have been told by other riders that I work with to break it in the way you plan to ride it, not sure how true that is tho.

I’m under the school of thought that you should not go crazy with the bike, but you should take it through the revs.

My Vulcan 500 doesn’t have a tach, but recommends staying under 48mph in 6th for the first 500 miles… needless to say, since I have to travel the freeways, I went above 48 mph. I did try not to rev too high going through the gears, but 48mph? Really??

I did exactly what the manual said. But who knows if it was the right thing to do. I just hope the engineers wrote the thing and not the lawyers.

brand new 08 250R, i am 100 miles away from finishing the break in period…

recommendation was 500 miles < 4K then another 500 miles < 6K... I added 1K to each of these limits and did all of my first 500 miles riding in streets that were 35 mph or less. I also made sure there were a ton of stop signs and such so that I was walking through the revs instead of just pinging at the max for that break in part... i will probably upgrade in a year or two to a bigger bike, so my 250R will last at least as long as I need it

btw, this took a LOT of time and effort… and it also means that your first experiences riding will be out in traffic with soccer moms… but you will also get good a shifting and avoiding things

When I bought my Suzuki S40 it only had 61 miles on it and I followed the guidelines to the letter. The S50 I just got a few weeks back had 2000 miles on it already so, well, I just opened it up and away we went
