I ride to work early in the morning and late at night a few times on 237 here in california. Winds were pretty strong some of them days and I was getting pushed around on my sv650s. From the outside of laneX to the middle of laneX riding @ ~70mph. As far as being safer goes, I guess that depends on when you notice the wind pushing you and how you adjust to it… But I, myself, would think the heavier the bike, possibly the more “resistent” to wind it would be in terms of being pushed around easily…
