I did things in the wrong order, I signed up for the MSF course which was 2 months out, bought a 250cc virago a week later that I felt was a great deal and couldnt pass up. I had no prior riding experience and had planned on just riding the bike in the drive way and local parking lots to get the feel of it before the course. After getting ym gear and learner’s permit I started off slowly and began reading all the information I could, I gradually gained confidence enough in the neighborhood and local roads and slowly began riding farther from my house. After about a month I felt confident enough to ride the bike into work, a 25 mile one way trip. By the time the MSF course came around I was glad that I did not go into it without riding the bike, I was able to relate to the situational discussions better and get more out of them, and I was more confident controling the bike on the riding course.
I would suggest that you dont look at it as a delemma, but a chance to improve your riding skills and confidence at your own pace
