Tourmaster Cortech Sport Tail Bag Review

Although I love my Chrome Messenger Bag, I found that sometimes I just don’t want something on my back when I am riding my motorcycle, especially if I am carrying something heavy or something that needs to be transported horizontally (like food!). I looked around for an inexpensive but good quality solution and came across the Cortech Tailbag.

Lookin' Good

One of the things you will notice about this tail bag is that it actually looks good on sportbikes. Most luggage looks pretty bad, it’s either too bulky, too cube-ish, or just plain ugly. The Cortech tailbag is tear drop shaped so it almost looks like an extra large rear seat cowl for your motorcycle, it just looks fantastic. It clips on by 2 bungies that interlace through the bag itself, and on the bottom there is a grippy fabric that makes sure the bag doesn’t slide around on your seat. I’ve had this bag for a few months now and although the bungies have lost a little bit of their springiness since I use the bag nearly every day, they still hold it very securely to my motorcycle. I hook the bungies on my passenger pegs and on the underside of my fender.

It's Huge

The bag itself is actually deceptively roomy when you open it up. I can fit books, laptop, shoes, and an assortment of smaller items very easily inside the bag. If you have a LOT of stuff to carry though, the bag also expands sideways giving you nearly double the volume. I personally haven’t run across a situation where something hasn’t fit in this bag. I remember one time I was quite worried when I ordered 50 hot wings to-go from Hooters. I honestly didn’t think the container would fit in the bag and I would have to sacrifice some of the wings to the asphalt god. In hindsight I probably should have taken the books out of my bag before going to get the food in the first place, but it all ended up fitting thankfully.

The bag comes with a rain cover but that thing lives in my closet, even when it is raining. The stuff inside doesn’t get that wet even when it is POURING rain, but I suppose it is nice to have if you are transporting sugar or something else water soluble. The bag also has a variety of pockets on the inside flap, and two pockets on each of the side expansion slots. My only complaint is that my pens always fall out of the pen holder pockets after I close the bag, but the side pockets are really useful to put things you should always carry with you like tools, emergency supplies etc…

Complaints

My only other complain with this bag is if you leave it on your bike it is easy for thieves to get in the bag, or steal the whole bag itself in under 10 seconds. This means if you plan on leaving your bike for more than 20 minutes, or if you have something valuable in the bag, that it is best to take it off the bike and carry it with you. The people at cortech were thoughtful enough to include a shoulder strap with the bag that clips on so you can carry the bag like a messenger bag.

This is probably the best soft tail bag out there when you factor in looks, volume, and price. Plus if you need more room the bag can attach to some Cortech saddle bags and it becomes a 3 luggage system that will serve you well if you do some long distance touring.

Quick Note

One more quick thing, they give you a warning on the bag not to put more than 10 lbs in the bag at one time, but I can say I have safely traveled with 20-30 lbs of stuff in this bag with no problems. You just have to make sure your bungies are secured tightly, and you resist the urge to pull wheelies ;)

Pros

- Looks great
- Really roomy by default, and can increase space by unzipping expansion slots.
- Inexpensive compared to the quality received

Cons

- Thieves could easily steal the bag if you leave it on your bike
- No liner in the bag so I hope you don’t spill any Chinese food inside or it might be a pain to clean.

Have this bag in black for over a year, and yes it is a great buy for the money. I leave my rain cover in one of the side pockets, since it doesn't take up that much room, and it slips on in seconds to keep the bag dry.
While you do not want to leave the bag unattended on the bike for more than a few minutes, the bag comes off in under ten seconds on my bike.

One other thing to note...

I've had this bag for about 3 yrs and generally love it. However, over time the bungees stretch and extra care has to be taken to make them secure. Also, the weight limit really applies when you're carrying the bag with the over the shoulder strap. I had about 20" of gear in mine and the buckle piece of the strap cracked. I could still carry lightweight articles in the bag but anything over the 10" was a huge gamble (if you favored the shoulder strap to the hand strap. The stitching and zippers on the bag has held up extremely well and the bag still looks like new, overall. Thought a long term report might aid someone who is looking to purchase this bag...

+1 on this tail bag.

+1 on this tail bag. Decently compact in it's normal size, and quite roomy when expanded. I carry tools, water bottle, alternate visor (clear vs tinted for rides ending at night), rain gear, pressure gauge, visor cleaner, camera, and maps in mine, and still have room to wedge little things in here and there. I also just finished a 2000 mile ride with it and the saddlebags connected and have to give a good review for the whole system together as well.

Can you fit a full-face

Can you fit a full-face helmet in that thing? Would be nice to have a passenger helmet fitting inside.

Long-time owner...

I bought this a very long time ago - I think 5 years. I think it was right after it came on the market.

I love it. I have a big sport bike (I'm a 30 year rider who found this site and use it a lot to teach newbies) and I have it on a rack over the tail, as I hate backpacks while I'm riding.

Matter of fact, it's sitting next to me on the floor right now, as I've been taking the bike to work all summer. Mine is black.

Mine must be a slightly different version as I had straps and clips (like on camping equipment and backpacks) so I strap it to the rack. Yes, it takes about 20 seconds to put on and 10 seconds to take off. I never leave it on the bike except when parked near an attendant, as I have a noisy Scorpio alarm on my bike. I don't mind leaving it on the bike if there's nothing in it.

I use this bag to commute daily to work. As I wear full leathers and boots on the bike, I have to pack all the clothes I'm wearing that day at work along with lunch, maybe a laptop and a few other items.

It carries everything EXCEPT a helmet. It's low-profile so items that are large in 2 dimensions always fit but a large 3 dimensional item like a helmet will not.

I don't use the shoulder strap or rain cover, but the handle is incredibly strong and this thing hasn't got a single loose thread anywhere in 5 years.

There's only caveat, and I think this is my fault. One time I think the zipper on the side pocket opened and my wallet fell out. The other time I KNOW I didn't zipper it closed and I lost my wallet, cell phone, glasses, iPod headphones, and tickets to the Red Sox game. Luckily, someone saw the stuff fall out and by the time I got to my office and realized it, I called my cell and the finder answered. The only thing I didn't get back was the glasses, which got run over before the guy could snatch my stuff out of traffic. So now I'm careful to make sure the zippers are closed, and I put an extra strap over it so the zippers can't open by themselves.

This bag has held up great considering it commutes in L.A. traffic every day. Lastly, the fabric hasn't turned clammy feeling like a lot of my other Cordura bags have.

great commuter bag

This bag is great - had it for a couple of weeks. Has replaced my messenger bag completely. Feels very secure on the bike and comes off quickly. It has become my new briefcase. I remember seeing a tailbag or tankbag that converted into a backpack that had some sort of helmet mounting at the bottom but can not remember the brand... getting old *sigh*

Just ordered one...

I've just ordered a Cortech sport tail bag for my GSX650F as I'm getting fed-up strangling myself with the backpack when I have my laptop and power supply etc. in there. Hope it works out...

Re. the tank bag that converts into a backpack and in that role can also carry a helmet, I think you're probably talking about the Icon Urban tank bag. I was going to get one of those based on what I'd seen of them on the internet, however, I quickly changed my mind when I saw how big they were.
