HJC FS-10 Helmet Review
The great folks at www.RidersDiscount.com provided me with the FS-10 helmet by HJC to review. I have been dying to try this helmet ever since I saw it online. It has features that few other helmets have and the price is lower than even the most inexpensive Shoei helmet.
Fit and Feel
When it comes to helmet fit it is very important to make sure you get the right sized helmet for your noggin. It even goes a step further since different brands cater to different head types. Shoei might design their helmets to fit a more egg shaped head while Arai or Scorpion might suit a more round head shape. For example my head fits perfectly into a medium Shoei helmet; However when I chose a medium HJC to review I found it to be too tight at the crown of my skull! I had to exchange it for a large which was pretty surprising, I didn't think I had THAT big of a head. Once I got the large helmet in the mail I tried it on and ran it through my various helmet tests. It passed all of them but now that the crown of my head was comfortable, the rest of the helmet was just a tiny bit looser than I would have liked. I'm positive this sizing issue is because of my head shape and not because of a helmet defect of any sort. After I found the right helmet size for the brand I was happy enough with the fit to go riding for a few hours.
One thing that stood out about this helmet is how large it is. Even the medium I originally received was slightly bigger than other helmets I was used to trying in that size. The helmet was also slightly heavier than my regular TR-Z that I usually ride with, especially near the top of the helmet. These aren't really complaints, just observations since I didn't notice any increased head or neck fatigue while wearing the FS-10. I think the added weight can be attributed to some of the cool features that makes this helmet stand out from the crowd.
Features
If you're like me and you find yourself riding during in the blazing sun as well as during the cold night then you have had to deal with differing light conditions. I have a clear visor and a dark smoke visor for my day to day helmet but recently I have found myself just leaving the dark smoke at home and wearing sunglasses instead. This is do to the fact that it is cumbersome to carry a spare visor with you, plus switching it out can be a chore even if it only takes 30 seconds. This problem is the main reason why I knew I had to get my hands on the FS-10.
The FS-10 has a flip down internal visor built into the helmet itself. No need to stop and take off the sunglasses or switch out visors, if I crest a hill and the sun is in my eyes it's super easy to just flip the internal SunShield down to protect my peepers. The SunShield locks firmly into place and once you enter a more dimly lit environment a simple button press retracts the shield instantly. I absolutely LOVE this feature. Let me say that again for emphasis: I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the SunShield!!! I honestly don't know why more helmets do not do this, I would be willing to pay $100 extra just for this mechanism alone.
Besides the flip down SunShield the other area where this helmet shines is in the Anti-Fog department. I have stated previously on BBM that, "All helmets fog up, but the better ones only do it when you are at a stop light." Well I am now going to have to amend that statement because this FS-10 just does NOT fog up! It comes with a fantastic breath guard that you can add or remove at your own leasure, but I recommend leaving it in place 24/7. With it installed my helmet didn't fog up once, even when I was at a stop light for over a minute in the cold morning. As an added bonus if you have the SunShield deployed and your fog guard installed you look more like a fighter pilot than a motorcycle rider. I am very eager to see how this helmet would perform in even colder temperatures, but I have no doubt that it would rise to the occasion.
The Kiss Test
The wind noise in this helmet is comparable to other helmets that cost 100-300 dollars more than the FS-10 which is pretty impressive. The vents on this helmet are practically useless and I couldn't tell a difference when they were open or closed. The great thing is the vents are not really needed because of the large amount of space between your mouth and the chin guard which lets tons of air cool your face. To illustrate this I'll give you an example that might sound a little weird. When I wear my TR-Z I can usually pucker my lips together and 'kiss' the inside of the chin guard on the helmet because it is so close. After I put on the FS-10 I noticed how much air was flowing from the bottom of the helmet and attempted to duplicate my 'kiss' test but failed! There was so much space between my lips and the helmet that I wasn't able to touch. Finally I had to step it up a notch; I ended up sticking my tongue out as far as it would go and it just barely hit the chin guard. Yes I am aware that it might seem strange that I'm kissing and tonging my helmets, but hey, I find my test to be more relevant then getting out a tape measure!
If you find that too much air is being let in the helmet also comes with a wind breaker that attaches to the bottom of the chin guard. This helps alleviate some of the wind, but so far I have kept it off of the helmet.
Conclusion
This helmet is a solid winner if you have a head shape that meshes well with it. The FS-10 is inexpensive and has features that you won't find even if you spend 2-3 times as much. I would wear this helmet every time I hopped on the bike if my head shape was just a little bit more inline with the way this helmet was built. I highly recommend new riders go check out HJC and this FS-10 before they go with something more expensive. By the way, did I mention that I LOVE that SunShield?

how much
ok guys..i need help..i want to buy a motorcycle ramp and found a super cheap one but only holds 300lbs. we own a 500 ninja and wanted to know if you thought it would hold??
Nice Write-Up!
I've been looking for my first helmet, and so far I've only sized the RF1000, but I've got to try this helmet, because that visor feature sounds great! That's interesting about the excess space at the front of the helmet. That's not factored in to "proper fitting"? Thanks for highlighting the helmet here.

Nope that extra space in
Nope that extra space in front doesn't really matter because even on a snug helmet your face won't touch that area. You should definitely try on this helmet though, it is fantastic. I should probably do an article on how to properly fit a helmet as well. Basically you want to wear the helmet for 30 minutes and take it off and examine your head for any red marks or irritation. When the helmet is strapped on you don't want it to be so loose that you can rotate it on your head, and you don't want to be able to pull it off your head either.

I was admiring this helmet
I was admiring this helmet at my local bike shop last week. It is definitely on my wish list. I wear a HJC already so looks like it will fit great like my current helmet does. Thanks for the review.
On another thread someone
On another thread someone was talking about this and asked if there was enough clearance for regular glasses and to still be able to use the sun shield.

Yep there would be enough
Yep there would be enough room to wear glasses underneath even with the sunshield deployed.

never fogs
I didn't know helmets were expected to fog, since my FS 10 has NEVER fogged up, even in rainy/humid conditions. I highly recommend this helmet to anyone it fits.
I know! All the helmets I
I know! All the helmets I have tried have fogged up, this helmet does such a good job of getting rid of it though it is not even a problem.

how loud is this helmet? I
how loud is this helmet? I heard that this model generates a lot of wind noise due to the visor device and vents. I'm sure that would be a non-issue if wearing ear protection; but how would it compare to quiet helmets like shoei's.
In my opinion it's about as
In my opinion it's about as loud as the Shoei RF-1000, and it's quieter than my TZ-R.

So I went into cycle gear,
So I went into cycle gear, sjc looking for a scorpion exo 1000 for the times I know I'll be caught riding at day to night, and they don't carry scorpions. They did have a fs-10, the blue, graphic'ed one pictured in this review, that someone special ordered. This person didn't pick it up because it wasn't the right size or something. I look inside, it's a small. Very nice. I have a small melon. I try it on and it fits. Not as snug as my shoei rf-1000 but pretty good. I play with the visor mechanism with my gloves on and it seems simple enough to work. It was hot inside since their a/c is broken and I've got the visor down with the helmet on and it's not fogging up. Very, very nice. I ask the dude what he can do for me and he checks his computer and pipes up, I'll take 40% off. I'm sold. The price comes out to 143.99 + tax. I pack up the shoei in my back pack, and road test the hjc on the ride home. The ventilation is actually pretty decent, not as bad as I thought it'd be from what the review said. The downside is that it's very light (some might call that good), and it doesn't fit quite as snuggly as my shoei. It just doesn't feel quite as sturdy as the shoei helmet. I also wish that the inner visor came further down the helmet, but it does a good job for blocking out excessive light. The shoei's still gonna be my main helmet, but for the price I got the hjc for, I'm happy with it being used for the times I know I'll be caught between day and night riding.
Edit: another con is that the hjc didn't have a small quick release strap on the inner d-ring for quick release. Much fishing will ensue getting the helmet unstrapped.

I know exactly what you mean
I know exactly what you mean about that quick release strap on the D-ring!!! I wish the HJC had that really bad, in fact I might just attach my own soon.
The visor for me didn't come down all the way when I had the medium on, but when I switched to large it covered 85% of my view which is more than enough for riding. Maybe try making sure that the helmet is on as far as it can go.

I have this helmet and recently purchased a quick-connect for about $10 at my local bike shop. Works great.
Sunshield...nose guard...helmet size
I just bought this helmet; was looking around for it at local shops and found it on clearance nearby. The helmet is for sure the right size, but the sunvisor still doesn't come down that far. Do you guys know if they sell replacement sunvisors that are longer?
Also, mine didn't come with that snazzy nose guard thing that makes the helmet look like a jet pilot's. Was it supposed to come with it, or is it optional?
And for the quick release, my bike shop installed one for me for $8. I thought that was a pretty nice solution!
FS-10 for months, IT Rocks
Hi All,
1st of all, this is my 1st post on this site, the information on this site have proved invaluable to me (perhaps my family as well since I didn't get a CBR 1000 like I originally planned). Got a '07 Ninja 250R ($2200 w/ 91 miles on it, a slight scratch for a drop, I dropped it myself once too) Sure glad it wasn't the $10,000 + CBR 1000 that I dropped. Anyways,
I've had the FS-10 for quite a while, used it for the MSF ridercourse as well, I did notice a bit winning noise at some speed with the head turn at an slight angle. Don't know how it compares to other since I haven't try those on yet. I find that the sunvisor works great, even though, at a stop and you look at the visor on purpose to realize it should come down a bit while you are riding you don't notice such thing and it works great to block out the sun's ray that's blinding you. For the helmet sizing, I'll always visit a retail store to try it with the smallest size first and twist it around if it's too right then move to the next 1 size up. It does take a few days of riding to "break in" to the new helmet, I find that their sizing with the cm/inches listed for the Sizes (like 22.5" for med..etc..) was right on the money but I still rely on actual fitting to determine size.
That's my 2 cents. Peace!
This may be a stupid question...
This may be a stupid question, but whats the difference between a full face and modular helmet?
A modular has the whole
A modular has the whole front part of the helmet flip up instead of just the visor like a full face helmet does. A modular basically turns from a full face to a half helmet.

Scorpion Helmet with visor?
Unfortunately, I fit more into the Arai Vector mold (intermediate oval) or even Oval where the HJC is pretty round. I ran across a helmet by Scorpion that has an internal drop down sun shade and fits a little better than the HJC. It also has a nifty little pump to fit the cheek pieces snugly. The Scorpion has both DOT and SNELL. Anybody know if these are any good? They are more expensive than the HJC.
Love my FS-10
I wear glasses and this is the helmet I found that I cold wear them and not crush them into my head and face. LOVE LOVE LOVE the built in sun visor as I don't need to worry about changing visors or carrying persciption sun glasses. The sizes seem to run smaller on this helmet, needed a large when other helmets seemed to be medium. Wore this to the MSF and the instructors loved the built in sunvisor. This is the first and only helmet I have owned. Tried on several different helmets at several retailers Arai, Scorpion. etc. Dollar for dolar this is a great value as I found it on line for only $150 the local store wanted $250. So yes I LOVE this helmet. If it fits great value for your $$$.
where did you find it
I had a similar experience with the price. I returned the $250 one I got at the local store when I found it online for $180. What site did you find that price?
Well after reading...
So i had panned on buying a simple helmet for 100 bucks but after reading this i might go for it where did you guys find the price of $170-180 the only place i saw that was ebay ( is ebay an ok site to buy a helmet as long as its new?)
I checked new enough.com on
I checked new enough.com on 5/13/09 and they have a XXL White FS-10 for 99$...So if you have a big head lol and are looking for a sweet new helmet at a ridiculous low price, now might be a god time to buy

The solid colors are a 60
The solid colors are a 60 bucks more than the fossil design. I am new to all this gear but did I miss something? maybe I'm shopping on the wrong site
Just bought one on the weekend...
This is my first helmet, and after reading this review I wanted to try one on. Apparently I do have a large head 2XL, along with my jacket size...sure limits the availability...anyway, my question is, should the breath deflector have come with the helmet? I didn't even think about it when I bought the helmet, but it doesn't have one. I will be going back to the store that I bought it to ask, but wanted to know if it is an option, or does it come with??
Thank you for all the excellent advice that this website provides us newbies..
Edit: Now that I have had this helmet for a while (yes, I went back to the shop and got the included breath and lower air deflector), I found that the breath deflector directs the incoming air straight into my eyes. It's not a problem around town, but out on the freeway your eyes water constantly. I had to pull over and take it out. I need to try it with the lower deflector in, maybe that was the problem.
I have also noticed that the shades don't come down as far as I would like and cut into my field of vision right where my guages are. Kinda a pain, I have to actually tilt my head down and look instead of just moving my eyes. The helmet is quite comfortable though, and seems to modulate temperature quite well. I have worn it on hot days and cool mornings and have not had a problem with a hot or cold head.
Thanks.
