Almost droped one.

Well, I guess since I don't preach hard against avoiding weight . . .I had to fess up to a near drop at work.

If you have seen the pic's I post, we run 30 to 40 bikes out in the morning, and pack them back up at night every day.

Well, today it was cold. Bikes were running like shit. I was on an older Electra Glide, a tad over 800 lbs. Ran it off the sidewalk, started to rip a left had turn right in front of the show room door . . . and the bitch tried to stall on me. As soon as the power faded the thing began to tip. I slammed down my foot and caught it, but the hard bags grabbed my heal and about broke my foot it hit so hard. I was lucky, my foot came off the ground rather than folding under that bag, AND, I gunned it and got power back on that rear tire and got the bike back up . . . a bit of luck.

No lid . . . had my foot stayed under that bike and it had stalled, I would have had a broken foot / leg, and it would have slammed me down face first into that parking lot . . 10 mph, but it would have hurt.

Lessons? Wont say I am going to dawn a lid for parking bikes at night . . . but clearly I am not risk free in that parking lot. It is a great reminder about weight, and, as I used to say about my forward pegs as well . . .you cant man handle big bikes . .they MUST do the work with the good application of power to that rear wheel.

Mostly it was just a reminder to slow down and respect the bikes I sit on every day. They never stop looking for an opportunity to scold me if I disrespect them. (-;

I'm glad to hear that you

I'm glad to hear that you came through it okay. Maybe you should consider a shorty for moving bikes around the parking lot? We like your brains just the way they are. :)

Scrambled, confused and off kilter? Mildly empty? Somewhat perverse? Just what are you saying? ((-;

Been a few drops at work, the rental girl got cut off and lost an Electra Glide, came down on her foot and did some serious damage. That was like 8 months ago and she is still healing . . . another dude I am told dropped a customers CVO on a BBQ day with a full parking lot of spectators.

You would be surprised how "entertaining" the parking lot is at times. Most folks just dont draw attention, great riders are kind of hard not to notice, the perfection and confidence show. We had one guy leave on a metric this week duck walking the bike out of the parking lot with a girl on the back . .we were all almost afraid to watch them hit 441 . . . . then there are the ones who try to over ride, to "look" great, but that just clearly aren't . .to fast, real sloppy.

Had a customer try to drop a CVO today, (think $36K). THAT would have been embarrassing. LoL He barely got it, it was folding the floor boards while he planted a foot and lifted with both hands. Not his most graceful moment. His GF was cute and flirty however, so I forgive him. (-;

Best riders in the parking lot still are the LEO guys, most of them can really handle there bikes.

Guess in the end, move something once, not much risk. Move 50 a day, and sooner or later some glitch shows up. Mostly the point was the sputter in the engine was almost enough to put me down. Not something I had really thought of before. That was a first time experience, still learning. (-; Today I was WAY more aware of how these things are running under me.

Mildly Perverse

owlie's picture

My preference has always been for mildly perverse.

However, my thought was lucid, coherent (reasonably), and funny. :)

Ahhhh . . but the "perverse"

Elwood1960's picture

Ahhhh . . but the "perverse" answer is far more interesting! ((-;<

Well, lucid, coherent, and

owlie's picture

Well, lucid, coherent, and funny helps to keep perverse from turning to perverted... And while I'm sure that you are proficient at the latter under the right circumstances, it is the former that gives your posts character- even in mixed company. :)

Well . . . . I am 'almost"

Elwood1960's picture

Well . . . . I am 'almost" always good. (-;

Sometimes you just have to be good at it! LoL Usually when I am not being particularly good, I am also not all that lucid & coherent. (-;

Don't need any more close calls like that!

Good thing you were able to think quickly enough to gun it and get it upright again. I was at our local HD dealer one evening just prior to closing time, and saw probably 8 guys all putting on half helmets and going out the front door to move all the bikes around to the back. You never think that just going a short distance like that could end up in a fall (with a possible injury, at that) but you're right, you don't want to give the bikes any extra reason to scold you unnecessarily! Glad you are okay...

Right. One guy I know

Wetmelon's picture

Right. One guy I know borrowed a full helmet just to test out a mountain bike in a parking lot (to many a rolled eye). Ended up losing it doing a simply wheelie that he'd done a million times, shattered the back of the helmet on the pavement when his head hit the ground. There wouldn't be much of him left had he not been wearing that helmet!

Kind of goes back to DOT
