new rider, bike difficulty

hello, my name is matt. this summer i purchased a 1997 suzuki gs500e from my older brother and ran into a few problems. first was a fuel line issue that i thought to be resolved. the bike would have an inconsistency in the throttle spiking the rpms way higher than intended instead of a smooth acceleration. After that was fixed i actually got myself into an accident being a wreckless teenager... Anyways to the most recent problem, today I went to try to start my bike and it wouldn't turn over so i thought charging the battery made sense but even after that it still would not start so i resorted to push starting it wich actually did work and then rode it around for a while, while it was running i turned it off and tried to start it back up again and it wouldnt work without giving it the right amount of gas and in a later attempt the bike would not start at all. can anyone tell me what the problem could be?
