Why it sucks to be a young male

I'm thinking about trading out my Ninja 250 for a DRZ400sm in the next few months. I wanted to check on insurance. The following is a progressive quote for the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM coverage. I have a perfect driving/riding record, endorsement, MSF certification, good-student discount, etc. This is rape. Best part is, it's still cheaper than what I'm paying now.

It pays to be a middle-aged male

I can't believe the difference!! As a middle-aged male who has been with progressive for about 6 years or so for auto coverage with no claims, yet having no motorcycle experience whatsoever, and having taken the MSF course, and getting much more than only the minimum required coverage, including roadside assistance, my 12-month policy was only $130 for my 2004 Suzuki GS500F.

I have full coverage on my 2000 SV650N through progressive, am 29 years old with a spotless driving record except for one accident that was found to be the other party's fault, and my rate is only $43 a month. interesting... Maybe the fact that mine is older?

Maybe stick with riding a bicycle?
Get in good shape, save lots of money, still on two-wheel...

Out of curiosity, why is this always your solution to questions like this? And why do you assume that the poster is not in good shape?

Because answers in a form of question intice people to think, rather than given an answer more or less set perameter of thinking. You assume that I think poster is not in good shape, I did not make such statement.

I simply imply that riding a bicycle can allow the rider to get in good shape. Whether the rider has good shape to begin with or not is not implied in my statement.

Progressive gave me the

Progressive gave me the highest quote out of the companies I searched. State Farm was cheapest by far in my first year but were slightly more expensive than Geico the second (I heard they raised their rates across the board). I stuck with them as I was too lazy to change and I'm glad I did as they were very prompt at paying out after my accident. Always worth paying a little more if you know you will be treated fairly in the event of a claim.

Still, look on the bright side, it's only money. When you are older and all your joints pop and squeak you would gladly go back to being young and paying insurance companies through the nose :)

What is it with this "male" name tag?

No offence to the original poster, but why do we (men) all seem to call ourselves and be called "males"?

I, for one, am proud to be a MAN, not an effeminate sounding "male" :)

HAaaaaahahaha

You're right...after all I suppose the word used to define the entire class of creatures on this earth with penises just wreaks of femininity ;)

Everything said is the truth. Weapon, your bike being older has a huge impact. When I tried the same quote with an '05 DRZ, the quote went down to $500/yr, but still barer bones than I'd be willing to get. Eon, you're right: there are bigger things than money, though deals like this make it almost too easy to argue that not having insurance is less expensive in the worst case.

If I do go this route, I'll definitely shop around. The cheapest rate I got my first year riding was even worse, and that was for the 250R: $1700/yr, and that's paid up front, not in monthly installments. What a joke.

Not the entire class, there

Not the entire class, there are also shemales (but maybe that's just a subclass) :)

It does really suck that you have to pay so much but I guess that's the price of being lumped in with all the squids. Especially since your track riding experience makes you one of the safer riders out there (I would think). I'm sure you know insurance is optional in WA but that would be a hell of a gamble. Would not take much of an incident to wipe you out financially.

Young male suck at not

Gary856's picture

Young male suck at not crashing new bikes/cars so the rates reflect that - plain and simple.

Of course

eternal05's picture

Don't get me wrong, based on intelligent statistical analysis, nobody in their right mind would insure my age/gender for less than an arm and a leg. I mean, one of Elwood's favorite'd YouTube vids says it all:

All the same, it'd be nice if they worked on culling out the false negatives from the pile of should-be squiddlies. It really hurts in the wallet!

Ouch!!

First time I've seen that and it was painful to watch. Very painful.

Isn't it?

Best. Squid. Compilation. Ever.

JackTrade's picture

I sometimes watch the various squid vids on you tube, just to keep a proper perspective on how dangerous motorcycling can be....that video is probably the best compilation I've ever seen; I'll have to bookmark it.

I especially like how it shows that it's a bad idea to even hang out with squids. Even if *you're* not doing anything foolish, chances are you're still gonna get it.

I think squid crash videos

Gary856's picture

I think squid crash videos are awesome to watch. It's even better than watching movie special effects, until I start thinking about the human tolls behind each crash.

It does suck to see bad crashes

eternal05's picture

Some people are into that. I'm not...it irks me out. It's especially weird to me that people post and seek out death videos on YouTube, for instance. Yech.

But with these crashes, for the most part they're harmless. Yeah, they might have gotten really bad road rash, a broken nose, a broken leg, broken ribs, whatever, but they're not going to die, lose a limb, or hit vegetative state as a result of their [altogether deserved] accidents. That makes me feel better about laughing my ass off at them.

I got a quote for that same

WeaponZero's picture

I got a quote for that same bike from Geico. I'm 29 with one not-at-fault accident on my record. It was less than half of what the progressive one was. It was $400 or so for a year, full coverage.

I don't understand how

I don't understand how insurance could be that high.

My bike insurance for a year is what my car insurance costs every 6 months.

And the bike itself is better insured sitting still and moving than the car.

You're forgetting something

eternal05's picture

You're insuring an older small-displacement bike. The price of insurance drops dramatically for motorcycles the farther they get from being new. If this was an '05 DR-Z instead of an '09, the price would drop to ~$300.

At Geico, I got a quote for a 2010 Ninja 650r. I'm 18, with no MSF, and no riding experience. $300 full year. I say that's a pretty good deal :) I had a screenshot, but it loooks like I've deleted it.

P.s. What happened at 1:43 in that video? It looks like something breaks on his bike?
