Passed the NRS (New Racers School) - 10.07.2009

megaspaz's picture

Passed the new racers school. A fun experience. Passing drill session was intense and fun and the race start was totally nerve wracking. Will I race next year or hold off to 2011 or not bother racing at all? Can't tell you.

Either way, here's some pics from the day.

So you want to mix it up for

So you want to mix it up for real . .  congrats on the pass. You know if you start racing, you need to be wild&crazy and win a few, get a sponsor so it does not soak up every dime you make. (-; Maybe a local dealer? Cover broken parts and fresh rubber at least?

heck, you don't need to win

heck, you don't need to win to get sponsers. you just have to do well enough. ;-)

Sponsorship isn't what you'd think at the club level

eternal05's picture

Local dealerships and the like might sponsor you, but a lot of the big companies just pay contingency money for wins. Contingency is what you'd think of as sponsorship, except the relationship is sort of reversed. Instead of "hey Michelin, pay me lots of $$$ give me tires and I'll slather Michelin stickers all over," contingency goes something like "hey racer, slather michelin decals all over your bike, put patches on your leathers, and on your transport vehicle, then win races and we might give you some pocketchange. Also we might give you a bit of a break on tires, but not much."

Especially at the club level, from what I've heard from racer friends, sponsors don't really care about wins. They care that a) you're at the track a lot, b) you have lots of exposure to people, and that when you make a good impression and promote the brand. But what would I know.

I dunno 'Spaz...I really like racing in theory. I love the competition. The safety record of club racing really scares me though. Especially at Pacific Raceways, helicopter visits are not at all uncommon. Maybe once I'm out of grad school (i.e. next season) WMRRA will have a true superstock class. I'd consider that. Maybe.

Either way I'll be jealous of you. When do the track days stop in Cali? They're already through up here.

Yeh, i'm totally aware of how

Yeh, i'm totally aware of how sponsership and contigency money works at the club level. My racer friends are going through that right now as well. Contigency's only good if you place in the top 4 or 5. Sponsership, you need to float around out there, hit the track and race, and mingle. Either way, I'm not counting on sponsership so if i do race, i'll need to start saving up moniez... this could mean doing less trackdays...
which doesn't quite seem right to me...

>.<

trackdays run through early-mid december over here. Actually, i'm scheduled to run sears in dec 4 and 5. As long as the provider doesn't cancel, i'll still be riding there rain or shine... usually providers do have a run rain or shine policy though.

_______________

Yea, I bet. Truth is not everyone who gets on a track at that level belongs out there. Get up to the big time and Darwin has thinned the heard pretty good. They may go fast, but they all have mad skill. Even the top guys have long laundry lists of broken and damaged body parts over the years. Cant live on that edge and not slip over the ledge some, more times than average human beings like me want to land on the ground at 100 mph or more. ((-; Lot of brass to do battle on that track.

You and Meg get huge rep points for the effort. Takes the right kind of brass to learn and enjoy a thing that can bite back, and do it the right way. Street fighters are stupid, I have a lot more respect for the guys who go to war with other skilled opponents and run to the limit.

Rubber down boys, grow old. (-;
