Get to deal with all the crazies that assume that all their life's problems are obviously inside federal buildings. I mean come on haven't you seen X-Files?! It's all a big conspiracy. I'm talking tin foil hats and all. If it's not some one trying to blow me up while I'm driving down the road, or shooting at me from rooftops, it's some local trying to stab me because I'm "The Man"

Despite my flippant comment earlier, I am actually a computer programmer specializing in databases, designing/programming etc. Your line of work is interesting to me as I have been roped in to helping out a friend analyzing the past 25 years of mortality data reported by the US National Statistics bureau (I would post the website link but I have been procrastinating for the past few weeks and cannot find it now). It's been interesting delving into death certificate reports going back to 1979. Almost like being a time traveler at times.

Specifically, I've been digging out information on the deaths of children related to dental issues. Around 20 deaths in the US each year that are related in some way to dental issues.

Wow, 20 seems high. How do

Wow, 20 seems high. How do you assign causality? Has the rate decreased since 1979?

I extract records where the

eon's picture

I extract records where the ICD-9 codes are between 520 and 529. Very few are the direct cause of death, most of the 20 records are the related records (I forget the terminology used on the death certificate, it's been a couple of months since I looked at this). I have not been analyzing the data, just extracting it but my casual glance told me that a high percentage of the deaths were in very young infants, almost new born. In other words a large percentage were born with a condition that would cause death and this condition affected the mouth in some way.

The rate has remained approximately the same over the years though it does range from about 12 to 26 each year.

I need to stop procrastinating and finish my data extract. The last 10 years or so they moved to ICD-10 codes and the file layout is shuffled once more. More work for me :(

I'll wish ya luck with that.

Elwood1960's picture

I'll wish ya luck with that. Miami is an expensive place to live, very expensive truth be told.

However . . every person I have ever seen take a "promotion" to CA, LA typically . . or NYC . . they all are back in less that a year. Keep in mind the government has no source of income other than our pockets. Programs and mandates have cost attached, and they always find there way back to the street. The cost of living sent them all running home. I have seen folks offered an extra 30 or 40K, and they say that was nothing once they arrived and tried to settle in. There standard of living was taking a huge hit compared to making 40K less in Miami.

Cobol (Dinosaur) Programmer Here

JtownJJA's picture

I about laughed my head off when I saw your picture Amoryl!! I'm a mainframe Cobol programmer here for a major international Bank. Maybe you've heard of it. Our slogan is, hmmm, let me see if I can get it right..., Money's what matters... We're what matters.... Hiring people overseas and laying off Americans is what matters.... I can't quite remember it, but you probably know who I'm talking about.
Let me cut to the CHASE, I got my 2-year associate degree in Computer Science right at the Y2K scare, and have been (for the most part) happily employed since. After working several years as a contractor, I started working where I am now as a FTE (Full-time employee) about 4 years ago. It's pretty nice actually. I work from home 1 day a week, and when my 8 hours is over, I'm usually free to go home and spend the evening with my family.
