You need exactly one of these to convince you that a full-face helmet is a really good thing to buy.

Oh gah! That would have been painful... More harsh than a bird!

Which HJC is that?

I was looking at the IS-16, considering I wear glasses. Running out of contacts as it is. :o

By the looks of it, that is

By the looks of it, that is the HJC CL-SP...

IS-16 rocks

SantaCruzRider's picture

I've got an IS-16 and love it. The internal visor is just dark enough for those morning and evening transition times -- and also leaves plenty of room for sunglasses if it's really bright mid-day.
Ventilation is also great. Decent amount of wind noise is made worse by the open space for helmet speakers, but it also leaves plenty of room if you use ear buds or head phones.
Got mine from NewEnough for just over $140.

Thanks SCR! Ear buds? so,

Ear buds?

so, wearing my glasses won't be a major problem then in terms of space. That's what I was curious about.

How is the visibility? No glaring or offset looks? (can't explain what I mean, but hopefully you know?) And the visor isn't a polarized shield right?

Sounds a lot better than my Bell Leviathan. :) Probably weights as much, eh?

Ear buds

SantaCruzRider's picture

I ride a couple hours a day and like to listen to music. So I wear noise-cancelling ear buds (in-ear headphones) that plug into my Ipod.
Visibility so far has been excellent -- and I'm pretty particular about that. The shield is not polarized.
Not sure how the weight compares to the Bell, but the IS-16 feels light to me.

Model

Clay Dowling's picture

I don't know the exact model. I went to the cycle shop closest to my work one day and bought it with the following requirements:

1. Full Face.

2. Snell & DOT rating

3. Fit properly

4. Brightly colored

I actually wanted a metallic flake helmet, but they didn't have them at the shop, so I got a graphic design instead. And thankfully, they had a color that matched my bike.

Now I feel better about my

Now I feel better about my choice... bought my first bike yesterday, and got them to throw in a helmet free... told them that the $70 did not fit, so they threw in the $110 one...

btw, was that a big bug?

Cicada

Clay Dowling's picture

I think that's what it was. I know it was a black dot dropping out of the sky and making its way across the road at the same time. Cicadas seem to be the highest flying of our local bugs, and they're damned huge, so that seems the most likely. Sounded like hitting a rock, so that fits the big-bug theory.

That is a little bug in

That is a little bug in Florida. LoL

The worst are love bugs . .man, when they are mating, you just end up one big black mess.

Elwood wins, FL is still in the Jurassic period with their bugs, but I've seen bigger in AK. ;)

We have big bugs

Clay Dowling's picture

but they mostly don't come out in the light of day. If you can find a warm interior space where they're relatively undisturbed, we get the 3 inch cockroaches. They need the protected space though, otherwise the mice eat the little brutes. This climate definitely favors mammals.

Just looked up "lovebug." I always thought it was something that needed a good round of penicillin to clear up. Didn't realize it was a small swarming bug. I could see those being exciting on a motorcycle as your face shield suddenly turned black.

They will black out a cars

Elwood1960's picture

They will black out a cars windshield. Lol hate the stupid things.

We don't get a ton of flying cockroaches on the road, to many warm homes for them I guess, but dragon flies can give ya a good splat. LoL Gnat's of coarse, and mosquito's for sure in rainy season, especially if ya run the glades after dark.

In any event, falls aside . .large or small bugs, I prefer them on a face shield as apposed to my teeth. (-;

First bug swarm

Clay Dowling's picture

I hit my first bug swarm last night. As i was coming up to an intersection I noticed a lot of black dots hanging in the air, about 20 feet out. Since I was doing 40 at the time, that was just before I heard the smack of a dozen or two decent sized bugs all hitting my windshield at once.

I'm looking forward to the june bug hatch, because I understand they swarm too. That's when I might be rethinking that textile jacket....

Fireflies will be interesting

Fireflies will be interesting at night too. ;)

Of course, dive bombing birds aren't fun either.

LOL...I know all about the

LOL...I know all about the june bugs...and rose beetles...sounds like someone hitting you with an automatic BB gun on your helmet. One of the reasons why I want the Classic LT and not the Custom for my 900..... windshield is nice to have

bees

For some reason, I'm a yellow jacket and whatever else kind of bee is around here with a stinger magnet. They break on my jacket, and land in front of my speedometer.....I just hope one doesn't hit my neck.......

Was wearing my half helmet

Dagger's picture

Was wearing my half helmet and goggles last Sat and took a drive through the mountains.. Hit a bug dead on and when it exploded it covered the full left side of the goggles.. Took me by surprise... I REALLY need to get a windshield for the new bike...

I just want to make it out of this life alive...

Well . . . . . . . . at least

I have no idea what hit me, I

I have no idea what hit me, I didn't see it coming, I heard a loud noise (it hitting my face shield), and there were no mega guts, but there's a 1/2 in. scratch on my face shield right in between the eyes. I'm glad I wasn't wearing a brain bucket, b/c I think it would have hurt like hell....
