    Hello All,
me and my dad are getting bikes. he planned the gsxr 750 for himself, he never rode a sport bike but hes had harleys before.

anyways now on to me, i love the look and feel of the 08 gsxr 600, it contours to your body perfect, i fell in love.
but i didnt fall in love with the price, i think the 08gsxr is pricey. i was told about the 08 250r. i read the full review about it and it sounds like a great bike. my dealer has access to one at the end of july, all black for me if i want it. now i read if your over 260 you should get a 500. now im allmost there but dont really go over 240lbs.
im about 6’1-6’2 between 230-245lbs at the most im also 22yrs old if that matters.

is the new 08 250r the right bike for me?
or will it feel sluggish and slow off the line and such since i weigh a little more?
thanks any assitance would be appreciated.!

    ps love the site!
will donate once i get my paypal unblocked lol

The general consensus if this is your first bike and your first time riding evah, then you want to stay away from inline 4 sport bikes 600cc and up. A lot of throttle control needed and goosing the throttle’s real easy to do. Depending on the kind of riding you plan on doing, a ninja250 could be enough for you until you’ve learned enough about riding and/or gained enough skills to move up. But it all depends on you. At your height and weight, it isn’t unreasonable to start of on a 500cc bike either, or an sv650/ninja650r.

Ben has a zx-6r. He’d know best if that would make a good beginner’s bike. A couple of good ones in the 650cc range are the kawasaki 650r or the sv650s. The 2008 sv650 comes now as the sv650sf which includes all the fairings. I think both bikes come with abs options as well. The 2008 sv650sf basically looks like my 2007 sv650s after i added the lower fairings. Both of these bikes sport a wide powerband, linear throttle power delivery, and are quite nimble as well as sporty looking.

The Katana is considered a mildly beginner friendly bike. It *is* a 600cc in-line four. It is pealy and powerful. But more than that, it is also heavy. It is close to 500 pounds with a tank of gas.

While I have never ridden a Kat, I seriously doubt it is terribly nimble compared to a much lighter sport bike.

Certainly people have learned to ride on Katanas. But that doesn’t mean it is a good idea. Just beacause a sport bike (such as the Kat or the ZX-R) are not the current crop of road going track specials does not mean they are friendly bikes to learn on. They *will* bite you when you make a mistake. For your first bike, avoid inline fours. The only exception to this is the GSXF650, which frankly is still a very heavy bike (it replaces the Katana).

The twins are much nicer engines to learn on. If you simply must have the power, then go with one of the 650 twins (SV, Ninja). I seriously question anyone who tells me that the 250 isn’t fast enough. Fast enough for what exactly? Even with a 300 pound rider the 250 will out accelerate 90% of cars on the road and reach “do not pass go, do not collect $200” speeds.

The ninja 500 is probably the single most under-rated sportbike in modern history. It can accelerate to 60mph in under 4 seconds. It can corner better than most riders can push it. Yes, the guys who spend all night looking at gixxer centre-folds will look down their nose at you. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to leave you in their dust. And more importantly, it doesn’t mean they’ll have more fun than you.

One last point, before you decide on a bike, talk to your insurance broker / agent. Depending on who you are insured with and where you live, there could be a huge difference in cost between insuring a supersport (like the gixxer), a sport-touring (like the katana), and a standard (like the Ninja 500). Especially as a new rider who need to take those things into consideration. Many places around here simply won’t insure a new rider on a supersport.

after looking at the bikes i just cannot see myself spending money on a bike that i hate the looks of, the ninja 500 for instance. it looks like a old ninja 250 and i think there but ugly. im not going to spend my cash on a bike that looks that way.
i wish they would have done the ninja 500 over like they did the 250r. then id be sold.

so ive taken katana out of my list of bikes to check out.
so my list continues, zx-6r, 08 250r, and then??
i dont think id mind a sv650sf but the thing is that there kind of expensive.

    With a MSRP of $8999.00 for a 2008 zx-6r on your list, you’re complaining about about a $6899.00 2008 sv650sf being too expensive? $7399.00 for an sv650sf with ABS.

    /me boggles… :-P

    Edit: $8999.00 is for the 2007 zx-6r. 2009 zx-6r MSRP is $9099.00

the price for the used ones are all over the map but currently i found a 06 with 1200 miles for 5000k and thats just 1 i seen on craigslist in my area.
sorry i did not specify exactly what i meant.
i cannot really see spending over 5500$.

looking more into the SV650S, the picture on the suzuki site does not do justice.
looking on ebay i have found that the SV is a great looking bike and found a 06 with 345 miles for4k
so it is a really affordable bike.

i found that i dislike with the SV is the rear taillight black plastic assembly.
    it makes the bike ugly
now i found this SV650S on ebay and it does not have that rear black plastic fender type blinker part
does this bike have the fender eliminator kit on it?

Yes. The fender has been eliminated by a fender eliminator kit.

now you were saying the accelleration on the gsxr600 and such is like a jet turbine, so how is the accelleration on the sv650s compared to the gsxr? is the sv650s a way slower bike or is it just the same but the gsxr climbing speeds faster?
what is the differences between the two?
i went to a dealer today and say on a sv650s with abs it felt great.
i am leaning more towards this bike now.

    a ZX6R is NOT a beginner bike.
