Does anyone lock the steering wheel?
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 18:47 — Candice
I've been wondering if I should be locking my steering wheel when I park my bike at work, the gym, walmart, wherever. I have not been doing that basically because I can't figure out how it works. I read the manual and did step by step but I can never get the key out so for now it remains unlocked. I didn't really think anyone would take off with my bike, how they gonna start it up when they want to ride it, right?

I can't speak for all bikes
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 18:55 — ranetteI can't speak for all bikes but for my scooter and motorcycle, after turning the wheel all the way to the left to lock it, I then turn the wheel just a drop to the right and the key frees up. On both of my bikes if I leave the wheel as far to the left as I can turn it, the key will not come out of the ignition, maybe it is the same on yours.
who says you need to start
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 18:55 — megaspazwho says you need to start up a bike to steal it? 2 guys, 1 van. ;-)
Anyhoo, i lock the steering. It shouldn't be hard to do. Just make sure to push the key down while moving the key to the locked position. It's been this way for all the sportsbikes i've ridden. It may be different for other class bikes, but i wouldn't think so
So for me, this is what i'm doing for bike security.
1. lock steering wheel.
2. top of the line lojack service on all my bikes.
3. park close to building or on sidewalk/wide-walkways in front of windows with foot traffic.
planning on getting a disc lock screamer as well. That covers most of the bike. Although if people want parts, they'll still be able to get 'em off your bike. not much you can do there.
Edit: key should just come out when it hits the lock position. you may have to "wiggle" it out a bit.

by "wiggle" he means move
Wed, 10/15/2008 - 03:14 — Jirikiby "wiggle" he means move the steering left and right... not wiggle the key...
i usually push the wheel all the way to the left... turn the key to lock... and then pull up on the key as I press the left hand grip forward a bit with my hip...
I always lock the bars. I
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 19:11 — bob250I always lock the bars. I guess it makes it that much more difficult for someone to take off with the bike.
Not that difficult at all:

Ok, I better start locking
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 19:33 — CandiceOk, I better start locking it then. I will try again tonight. If I can't figure it out I'm going to pick up my plates on Saturday so I can have them show me.
Megaspaz, thanks for the good tips!
Ranette - I think you may have solved my problem, many thanks!
my bike doesn't have a
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 00:06 — nau_lax21my bike doesn't have a steering wheel, guess i cheaped out a little. i do lock my handlebars every time i get off the bike though
Lock
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 01:27 — RupmiscI locked the Nighthawk in any marginally questionable area. As a practical matter, though, two people could have lifted it into a truck even locked. The 696 is a little heavier, and the lock is done just by turning the key a little further left in the ignition. So automatically unlocks when you start bike.
I lock my bike so no one
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 03:30 — LokiI lock my bike so no one steals it.
Security
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 05:07 — RabUsing the steering lock should be the absolute minimum security you use. Even if you're just going into the store at the gas station. It's easy for a thief to run your unlocked bike up a ramp and into the back of a van.
Add a Xena disk lock/alarm for more security. A heavy chain or cable to lock the bike to something immovable is even better.
Ultimately, if they want it, they'll get it, but if you make it difficult for them, they might just move on to the other guys bike.
The "professionals" are mostly interested in the high-end stuff though.
I lock my handlebars and use
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 05:22 — DaggerI lock my handlebars and use a disk lock.. Like ranette said.. Once you get your key into the LOCK position.. Turn your handlebars back to the right slightly and the key should pop out fine... Then when unlocking (at least with my V-Star) I have to turn the bars slightly to the right to get the key to unlock the bars..

I lock the bike every time I
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 13:26 — AndrewI lock the bike every time I park it. One thing new riders can do is forget to turn the ignition off so I lock it and know that the ignition is off. I live and work in safe areas but it's good practice anyway. Mine is a push down and to the left. Just turns back when you want to unlock it. Never had a problem getting the key out.

Always
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 15:10 — MattI always lock it, just a good habit - like locking your doors.
It won't stop a determined thieft, but it'll dissuade a casual one.

I meant to say - does anyone
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 15:27 — CandiceI meant to say - does anyone lock their handle bars - but after I saw my mistake I figured everyone knows what I meant, hee hee. I figured it out by the way, had to turn bars to the left and then a little to the right like Ranette and some others suggested.
How about my helmet? I've been using the helmet lock on my bike so I don't have carry it in with me but I'm thinking someone could really just cut it off quite easily. No problems so far but my helmet won't fit in the locker at the gym.
Glad to see I was finally of

I just use my helmet lock,
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 18:06 — megaspazI just use my helmet lock, if my bike has one. if you're paranoid, which i am, in certain areas, carry it with you. in your case, ask the front clerks in your gym if you can leave the helmet behind their desk. You don't normally see helmets being stolen as most riders won't buy a used helmets, so to thieves, it's pretty much effort for no gain.

My helmet lock is only
Sat, 10/11/2008 - 01:42 — chromium ghostMy helmet lock is only useful when the bike is cold considering it leaves the helmet touching the pipes... Not an issue though as I always carry the helmet around with me. Chicks dig it. Kind of the whole point of owning a motorcycle no?
Do you use the chin strap?
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 16:19 — ilnamDo you use the chin strap? They could cut that, I suppose, or you could try locking the D bracket thingys instead. I didn't think it would work at first - it's sort of tight, but now I have the hang of it. I've also been considering this locking, slash proof helmet bag:

Well a helmet without a chin
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 16:51 — JimWell a helmet without a chin strap is pretty worthless.
If you're using a full face
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 16:55 — ranetteIf you're using a full face helmet, and I would assume everyone on this site would be, just open the visor and put the cable through the opening and under the chin bar. Unless they bring a bolt cutter to cut the cable that is pretty secure.
I know a guy who was riding
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 17:52 — AndrewI know a guy who was riding in Florida (while lived in IL) and his helmet was cut off his bike at the chin strap. I don't know what you would do with a strapless helmet but it does happen.
Andrew
Yeah, I lock the helmet up
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 18:43 — CandiceYeah, I lock the helmet up using the brackets but they could still cut it off on the material part and all that is really secure is the brackets. I had a hard time at first also securing my helmet to the helmet holder but then someone kindly showed me to hang the helmet on the back blinker and then secure it to the helmet holder/lock thing, that works much better. Interesting helmet slash proof bag above. I was thinking the same thing, who wants a strapless helmet.
Absol;utely, always! Even when I park "her" in the kitchen....

I lock the steering column
Sat, 10/11/2008 - 01:38 — chromium ghostI lock the steering column out of habit. One of the joys of owning a Honda is that the lock works smoothly and easily. Key never gets stuck. Even on a 26 year old bike. Keeping it locked will also make you bike a bit harder to knock over, to the left at least. For you 250 owners I am assuming this is an issue in areas with a slight breeze.
I think most of the helmets
Sat, 10/11/2008 - 16:31 — DaggerI think most of the helmets that are stolen off of bikes are just done for kicks.. The helmets are pretty useless without the chin strap and like someone else said, most riders won't buy a used helmet.. I went with a pretty standard helmet for now.. So if it gets stolen I'm not out much.. If I had a nice Shoei I might carry it with me wherever I go though..

The only potential problem
Sat, 10/11/2008 - 18:59 — chromium ghostThe only potential problem is that crackheads don't know bikers won't buy used, strapless helmets....I suppose if you live in a crackhead free town this is not an issue, but I would also assume teenage hoodlums don't know this either.
Teenage hoodlums dont even
Thu, 10/16/2008 - 18:31 — adrenalinerushTeenage hoodlums dont even know that if you slice through the window of an unlocked soft-top jeep while the ownerr is out of town you can steal stuff from it... instead they just cut mine, emptied out the center console into the passenger seat in a neat little pile and stole only 1 thing... a fricken air freshener.... but aren't these teenage hoodlums BRILLIANT?!?! lol they get the kick out of being destructive whether it makes them money or not :o(
